Alright, let’s get into GTA 6. For two decades, I’ve been writing about games. However, it’s been a long time since there was such a dominant title in the industry. Whether you frequent gaming forums, Discord servers, or even casual conversations with your friends, the discussion will eventually find its way to Vice City. Arguably, this is because Rockstar is trying to surpass the records that were made possible by GTA V, which sold 230 million copies. GTA V has even remained in production for over a decade. No, it’s not a mistake when stating that a game released in 2013 is still making money in 2026. Thus, when Rockstar chanted “alright, here comes the next one,” the internet lost it entirely.
I want to take you through everything properly. No crazy theories, no “my cousin works at Rockstar” leaks (which we’ve all seen floating around social media from time to time) but the confirmed information, the rumored information from reliable sources, and the specs of the console as they stand today. Get yourself a coffee because this is going to be a lengthy one. There is a lot of information that I will be giving you.
Let’s answer the biggest question there is, because that is the reason why so many of you have clicked on this article to read the information that I have to share with you all.
Rockstar Games has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will be released on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. This date falls on a Thursday, which is Rockstar’s typical release day for their games rather than on a Friday.
Now, here’s where things get interesting with the release date for the game. The developers first announced that the game was to be released in 2025, when the trailer was first released in December of 2023. However, that date was then pushed to spring of 2026. Rockstar announced a third delay, this time to November. Each of these delays came with one of those famous “we’re sorry, but we want to make this perfect” Newswire announcements. Yes, the same words have been used by numerous game developers over the years. However, Rockstar has never been known to rush the release of unfinished games. Red Dead Redemption 2 was released when it was complete, not rushed to meet a deadline. Arguably one of the best games ever made, at the time of its release.
There’s also some nervousness growing within the community right now. Take-Two held an earnings call in May to announce once again that the game would be releasing in November. This helped to settle the nerves of the fans to a degree. Unfortunately, however, the delay of Borderlands 3 was revealed only minutes before an earnings call. Thus, fans still feel worried about whether or not another delay could happen. The quieter marketing campaign adds to the concerns. The third trailer for the game hasn’t been released yet. Only two trailers have been released so far. The first when the game was originally revealed in December 2023 and another in 2025. Fans are becoming increasingly eager to see more trailers for the game. Currently, November 19th is the date that everyone is working around, and the pre-orders have already gone live as of June 25, 2026.
This is rather straightforward and possibly somewhat disappointing for players who would love to see this on other consoles: PS5 and Xbox Series X/S only. There are no versions of this for last generation consoles, the Switch, or the PC.
I know. Yeah. Rockstar is doing it again with their classic approach to console and PC games with GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2. Both of these games were first released on consoles and then PC games would be released a year later. Based on this, people expect that PC gamers will have to wait until late 2027 or 2028 to be able to play this on their machines. Frustrating, yes. Surprising? No way. It seems that the decision by Rockstar to make this game compatible with next-gen consoles but not previous generations is not purely a marketing decision. The game is specifically designed for fast NVMe drives and the memory architectures of current consoles. As such, there will be no PS4 or Xbox One versions of the game. Rockstar seems to want their game to run on as modern of hardware as possible from the start.
Get ready, because the price for the game is higher than most players are used to seeing for games of this nature. The Standard Edition of the game costs $79.99, which is $10 more than the typical price of $69.99 that has been seen for similar games over the past few years. Additionally, the Ultimate Edition of the game costs $99.99 and includes three additional premium vehicles, such as a ’95 Grotti Cheetah, a Dinka Enduro motorcycle, and a Crest Kayak, as well as some other special in-game content. Should players be unsure about which edition to purchase, there is no need to worry too much. Players can always start with the Standard Edition and purchase the Ultimate Edition later, should them want to receive the additional content. Thus, this option is a pretty useful one for players considering the game.
One more added bonus if you pre-order this game or if you purchase it before November 20, 2026 will be the Vintage Vice City Pack that comes free with the game, regardless of the edition that you choose. Even if you opt for the Standard Edition, you will still get this bonus pack. Furthermore, if you purchase the game digitally, you’ll also receive one free month of the GTA+ membership. Interestingly enough, the game disc that comes in the physical retail box does not include the game disc. Instead, there is a download code inside the game box. This allows the retailers to distribute the copies of the game prior to the launch day when players can download and install the game. The game will be available for pre-downloading starting on November 12, one week prior to the game’s release. Given the size of this game’s world, I would encourage all players to take advantage of the pre-download option to ensure that they can enjoy the game without the frustrations of downloading such an enormous game on the night of its release when everyone else in the world will be downloading the same game.
Meet Jason and Lucia
Alright, now let’s move on to the actual game. While the specifications and the pricing for this game is not as exciting as the actual game itself, the protagonists for this installment in the mainline GTA series is a female named Lucia Caminos. She is to share the lead role with man named Jason Duval. Rockstar has described their dynamic as a modern day Bonnie and Clyde story, which fits in with what is presented in the trailers for the game. Beyond their appearance, the two protagonists include different features in their gameplay. Jason has the ability to aim for weak spots in his enemies, providing him an advantage in the gun fights throughout the game. Lucia has a similar slow motion game feature but with a single shot trigger, which can change the play style of the player according to which game character is being controlled.
Players will be able to switch between the two characters while playing the game alone, as Rockstar allowed players to switch between the three main characters in GTA V. In addition to playing as each character alone, there will also be missions in which both Jason and Lucia will be working together on the same mission. This is a change for the series that hasn’t happened before, so it will be interesting to see how far Rockstar takes this idea. Both characters have connections to specific locations. Lucia is connected to Leonida Penitentiary, according to official information about the character released by Rockstar. Jason is said to end up in the Keys at some point in the game. This was shown in some of the trailers for the game. Beyond this information, Rockstar has kept most of the details about the game’s storyline under wraps, which is to be expected of a company that produces these types of games with well-developed storylines.
Welcome to Leonida (Not Just Vice City)
Here’s something many people misunderstand about the game when they discuss it. They refer to it as the new Vice City game. Yes, Vice City is the main attraction of the game. However, the game goes beyond this one location. The game takes place in a fictional state named Leonida, which is essentially Rockstar’s version of Florida. Vice City, which is an alternate version of Miami, is at the heart of the game’s setting. However, the rest of the state extends beyond this city.
Based on the trailers and the materials that have been made official for the game, there are several locations within the game. There is the region of Vice City itself, which includes areas like Ocean Beach and its pastel hotels, Little Havana, Little Haiti, and the Venetian Islands. Beyond the city, there are the Leonida Keys, which are a series of islands connected by long bridges. There is also a swamp area called Grassrivers, which is inspired by the Everglades. Other regions include Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga. Additionally, there are the areas of Hamlet and Kelly County within the state of Leonida. Furthermore, there is another interesting rabbit hole that people can dive into regarding this game. Due to the license plates spotted in some of the trailers for the game, people can find evidence that suggests that there is a second state within the game’s setting named Gloriana, despite it not being officially confirmed yet.
Though still exist somewhere beyond Leonida, this mission is believed to be inspired by the country of Georgia. While no confirmation has been made official about this, the GTA community has always existed without the need for confirmation in the past regarding such a small detail, so it remains to be seen.
Furthermore, Rockstar has yet to disclose the size of the game’s world in square kilometers. However, several different outlets and the fan community dedicated to mapping the GTA world have estimated that the size of this game is likely somewhere between 1.7 and 2.5 times larger than GTA V’s Los Santos – an area that was mapped out by more than 16,000 Discord members who dedicated their time to comparing frames from the game trailers to satellite imagery of the city. That would represent a huge increase, especially if it were just the same level of detail, only bigger. The number of enterable locations throughout the game is said to be in excess of 700 locations across the world, including clubs, motels, restaurants, pawn shops, gun stores, supermarkets and even a Vice City Metro Station with trams that players can enter and ride.
Additionally, reports also suggest that Rockstar may opt for a live world strategy for the game after its initial launch. This would mean that while the initial game would contain Vice City and Leonida, additional cities would be added over time. This would allow for Rockstar to alleviate some of the pressure that they may feel on the development team and ensure that the game would remain one of the most visually impressive in the industry for several years to come.
The Wildlife and the Small Details That Really Matter
What makes an open world convincing to me more than almost anything else are the details of the individual ecosystems within the game. While GTA V featured some of this, GTA 6 is certainly aiming to include a variety of these features.
Some of the confirmed wildlife in the game includes alligators, dolphins, sharks, flamingos, foxes, deer, and jaguars. Furthermore, players are also able to explore various underwater areas of the game, and there is even treasure in these areas that players can uncover. This provides an entirely new layer of exploration for those who enjoy to wander around in the game. While GTA V included sharks and underwater exploration in the game, GTA 6 aims to go beyond what was included in its predecessor. With the geography of the game including the Everglades and the Keys, players may have a variety of reasons to explore the open waters beneath the game’s sand categories.
Combat, Movement, and the Wanted System Got an Upgrade
This is stuff that’s going to actually impact the way that the game feels when people are playing it, and Rockstar has clearly put a lot of work into making improvements to these systems rather than just the same systems that were in GTA V.
Combat and Stealth Have Been Improved
Combat and stealth in the game are reportedly being redesigned with new game mechanics. For example, prone movement will finally allow players to lie low, instead of simply crouching in the game like a confused meerkat. Furthermore, players will also be able to use zip ties to restrain enemies instead of having to kill them in all situations. Another new update to the game is the wanted system. Instead of the five-star system that has been present in Grand Theft Auto games for years, Rockstar is reportedly giving players a new tiered six-star system. While the specifics of the game are yet to be revealed, a tier above the previous version of the game would mean more intense interactions between players and police officers in the game. Lastly, the game is reportedly working to create more than 200 vehicles for players to enjoy in the game. Furthermore, these cars will have interactive interiors, meaning players will be able to interact with the objects within the cars.
How It’s Going to Look (And Why That Budget Is Insane)
Let’s talk about the visuals for a moment. For Rockstar, GTA 6 is reportedly the most expensive video game ever produced. At around $1 billion, the development costs of GTA 6 would clearly make it the most expensive game ever produced. For context, Rockstar’s other game, Red Dead Redemption 2, which features some of the most detailed and beautiful game visuals ever produced, cost around $540 million to produce and market.
The alleged development budget for GTA 6 by itself goes beyond that figure. Such an amount of money is significant for one entertainment product alone, but with the projected potential 20 million copies that could be sold in the game’s first 24 hours of release, it is understandable why GTA’s developers have invested so much money into the project. The features that will be incorporated into the game include ray-traced lighting and strand-based hair rendering, both of which take advantage for the hardware capabilities of current generation consoles. For those who are familiar with games that feature strand-based hair rendering technology, the graphical enhancements alone will be noticeable improvements over the chunky hair textures that were present in many of the games of the past. The implementation of both technologies will provide players with the most visually impressive open world in the industry.
What About PC Requirements?
Until there is an official confirmation of the release of GTA 6 for PC gamers, there will be no system requirements for the PC version of this game. There are none at all. Any mention of PC specifications for GTA 6 are purely an educated guess. Like GTA V and Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2, the PC version of GTA 6, whenever it comes to PS5 and Xbox Series consoles, will require a fairly powerful computer considering how much performance the console editions are pushing from PS5 and Xbox Series X hardware. However, providing exact specifications for the PC version of GTA 6 at this time would mean inventing information. It is always better to be up front and tell the players that no one knows the system requirements for GTA 6 yet than to provide them with guessed and potentially fabricated specifications.
Side Activities and Life Outside the Main Story
In the GTA games, one of the things that is always paid attention to is what the characters can do beyond the story missions. Considering that many players probably spend half of their playtime in the game wandering around and causing trouble, there are some confirmed activities in addition to the missions. Confirmed activities include scuba diving, MMA fights, and activities like golf, darts, or whatever other小游戏 Rockstar chooses to include in this installment. Additionally, the trailer for the game includes footage of a tennis court, a football stadium, and an amphitheater, all of which may have events in them. The game also includes some functioning infrastructure. For example, there is an airport depicted in the game and trams that go to the airport, as well as elevators in different locations in the map. While none of these may necessarily change the nature of the game, they are the type of small features that indicate that the developers considered how the game was supposed to function in real life.
GTA Online’s Future and the 32-Player Question
There are plenty of players who are wondering what will happen to GTA Online when GTA 6 makes its arrival. Since GTA Online has functioned as its own massive game economy for over a decade, it is very understandable that players are curious about the answer to this question.
While Rockstar has not revealed a complete roadmap of the features that will be contained within GTA 6 online mode, discussions have suggested that there will be support for around 32 players playing at the same time. This is not significantly more players than GTA Online can handle in its 30-plus player sessions, although it can get complicated quickly with exactly how many players can join specific game modes across the different generations of GTA Online. However, whatever the case may be, it is hard to imagine that Rockstar would abandon the multiplayer portion of the game altogether. Instead, they will likely seek to create the same success with whatever game mode or title the multiplayer content gets when GTA 6 arrives.
Should You Really Pre-Order It?
Look, I’m not going to tell you how to spend your money. However, based on the fact that I’ve spent the last two decades watching the gaming world rise and fall, I can tell you a little about the relative safety of pre-ordering either a Rockstar game or one from another developer.
Rockstar games are generally safer than others because they are less likely to produce a fundamentally broken product. While the Vintage Vice City Pack is nice to have, it’s not something that should dictate your decision on whether to purchase the game. Even better, if you’re waiting on gameplay review highlights, then you’re probably fine in your current decision – especially with the current date for the game’s release having been delayed twice. If you plan on playing the game, do keep the deadline for purchasing the game prior to November 20, 2026, otherwise you’ll miss out on the Vintage Vice City Pack.
A Quick Look Back (Because the Context Matters)
If you’re younger or relatively new to the series, it’s important to understand why this particular release is so enormous for those who have followed the series for years.
GTA V originally launched in 2013. GTA V was first released for PS3 and Xbox 360 systems. It was later remastered for PS4 and Xbox One systems, and then again for PS5 and Xbox Series X systems. Thus, GTA V has experienced three console generations. For gaming products, few have endured for as long as GTA V has. Furthermore, GTA Online has become one of the most profitable titles within the gaming industry, and it has endured in its successes even after most of the industry would have thought that it would have disappeared altogether. When Rockstar at last did reveal a true sequel to their acclaimed series after more than a decade, the excitement that poured out of the gaming community was not for the typical reveal of another video game from another famous game studio. Fans were excited for the end of one era and the beginning of another at the same time. For a generation of players, it was a period of growing older, attending college, starting careers, and even having children. Some of those children may be the next generation to ask for GTA 6. For someone who has followed the development and evolution of GTA since the PS2 era, this is a strange but humbling concept.
This may also help to explain why Rockstar has been so careful to reveal information about the upcoming game. They are not merely releasing a game to fulfill the demands and expectations of fans. Instead, they are concluding an era of one of the most profitable and successful forms of entertainment of the past fifteen years, and ushering in the next. This alone creates a significant amount of pressure for the developers, which helps to explain the various delays for the release of the game better than almost any official announcement that may have come with the game itself. With such enormous expectations for the game, it does not make sense to rush its release and delivery to the public.
How the Marketing Campaign Has Felt So Far
One of the parts of the entire release cycle of the game that is fascinating about this release is the fact that Rockstar has chosen to slowly release information about the game.
The fact that there are two trailers over the course of nearly three years is relatively little information when compared to most gaming studios and their releases of major games. Most publishers at this stage of game development would have already released numerous trailers and interviews about the game. Rockstar has done almost none of that. The first trailer was released in December 2023 and quickly broke viewing records. The following trailer in 2025 brought another huge wave of attention for the game. Outside of these two trailers, the only information that has been released through Newswire has been information regarding the game’s release dates, editions and pricing.
The GTA community has found itself in an unusual situation wherein it is difficult to determine whether the information shared about the game is from Rockstar itself or from fans who have taken the time to figure out the details of the game. Within the fan mapping community alone, there are numerous interpretations of the game’s protagonist Leonida based on footage of the game’s trailers, and the additional leaked gameplay footage from 2022, as well as the satellite shots of parts of Florida included in the game. Some of these projects by fans are impressive, and for many fans, entertaining to follow alongside Rockstar’s official promotion of the game. Thus, these are an interesting (if not wholly trustworthy) channel of information for fans to follow while they await the official release of the game. There has been some unwanted attention placed upon the game during the period leading up to its release, most notably due to a data breach by a group known as ShinyHunters, which instilled further chaos into the discussion of the game earlier in the year. Despite such issues, however, there has been no impact upon the official schedule for the release of the game. Thus, Rockstar has been receiving significant attention from fans and potential trouble-makers alike at this time. The company is under scrutiny from both groups simultaneously.
What I’m Most Interested to See
It’s interesting to note that even after two decades of writing about games, there is still a difference between the features and elements that make me excited to play a game versus what might be of interest to the gaming audience as a whole. GTA V already had three protagonists and allowed players to switch between them even in the middle of missions. Therefore, the idea of a game with two protagonists who have an actual romantic and criminal relationship with one another is an interesting way to provide some of the most important and character-driven stories from Rockstar yet. Additionally, I’m also very interested in how Rockstar might approach satire for this iteration of the game. Rockstar has traditionally used each installtion of GTA as a way of reflecting the culture and the era that they wanted to parody. For instance, Los Santos was a game that reflected the excess of Hollywood and reality show culture. In contrast, Liberty City was a game that reflected the culture of post-9/11 paranoia towards immigrants and those who struggled to achieve success in their lives.
Based on all that we know so far about Leonida, Rockstar appears to be well-positioned to create a game that hits upon influencer culture, the concerns of the climate, the wealth of the coastal areas, and the absurdity of Florida as it is famous for on the internet. All of this could be captured in the same way that Los Santos was depicted over a decade ago. This would be some of the best writing the studio has done in recent years. To be honest, all I want is to see Vice City at night with the synth-heavy music playing from the car radio. Some things don’t need to change and I’m perfectly fine with that.
The Bottom Line
So, where does all of this leave us?
Rockstar is releasing its latest game, GTA 6, on November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. There is no release date for PC or any console generations prior to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The Standard Edition will cost $79.99 with the Ultimate Edition priced at $99.99, though players will have the ability to upgrade to the Ultimate Edition at a later date if they wish for the additional content. The game’s story will focus on the lives of Jason and Lucia as they travel through Leonida, a massive fictional state inspired by Florida but with a redesigned Vice City within it. The game is said to contain over 700 locations for players to explore once they play the game. Rockstar has also revealed the game will include improvements to the gameplay’s combat features, as well as make extensive use of technologies like ray tracing and strand-based hair rendering. Finally, the game is reported to have cost Rockstar more than $1 billion to create – money that is clearly visible in all of the trailers and confirmed features of the game. In many ways, this raises the question of if the game will live up to the billion-dollar expectations of players who have waited for over a decade for it to be released. But based on the confirmed features of the game, it seems like GTA 6 may be the most ambitious project that the developers have attempted in their history. Despite how far November seemingly is away, time feels both incredibly far away and close together when one considers the long time that fans have been awaiting the game’s release. Either way, I’ll be here at midnight on the night of the game’s release.
Most likely with a full pot of coffee and nothing whatsoever planned for the week following the game’s release.
